As the day draws to a close and darkness descends over the city, a new dimension of subject matter comes to life. Evening photography in Ålesund is not just about technique – it’s about capturing the sense of calm, reflection and the city’s hidden energy after sunset. With the right settings and a little patience, you can create images that pulsate with mood, contrast and warmth.
Light, shadow and reflections – how to master blue light
The so-called “blue hour” – the time just after sunset – gives Ålesund a very special expression. The city’s Art Nouveau facades, the mirror-like canals and the dim street lights create a natural canvas that is ideal for atmospheric photography. To make the most of this light, set your camera to manual mode, use a low ISO (100–400 for best quality), and experiment with longer shutter speeds. Use a tripod to avoid blur and capture movement from people, cars or the sea – it brings the images to life.
One of the most unique things about evening photography in Ålesund is the city's interaction with the water. Reflections in Brosundet or at Skateflukaia double the light and create depth and mystery in the images. Here it is important to find the balance between natural light, artificial lighting and silhouettes. Often the simplest shots – a lamp in the fog, a pier under neon lights – can tell the most.
Composition and atmosphere in the dark
When you photograph in the dark, the rules of composition also change. Strong contrasts between light and dark can create drama, but also challenges. So think in terms of shapes and surfaces – build up the image like a painter. Feel free to use elements that guide lines, reflections or light signs to create depth. Silhouettes of people against the sea, a quiet boat under moonlight or light from windows in old apartment buildings create images that tell stories.
Use manual white balance. Street lighting often gives off warm, yellow tones, while neon lights can pull the image towards blue or green. Experiment with different settings and find the tone that suits the mood you want to convey. And most importantly – take your time. It’s often when you’re standing still in the dark that the best subjects emerge.
